The name of Mahatma Gandhi has been kept at the top of all the great people of India. Mahatma Gandhi, one of the world's most incredible superpowers, boycotted the British Raj by non-violence and succeeded in getting India independence. Even after his death, the whole world considers him his role model. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, a small town on the west coast of India. He was born in a middle-class family of the Vaishya caste. His father's name was Karamchand, and his mother was Putlibai. Mohandas Gandhi studied in a primary school in Porbandar. He had two brothers and a sister, and he was the youngest. When Gandhi was still in school, at the age of 13, he was married to Kasturba. Gandhi went to England to study law and returned as a lawyer in 1890.

Soon after coming to India, he was offered to go to South Africa to fight a trial by Dada Abdullah & Co. After which he found in his case study that Indians and African people face discrimination. The turning point in Gandhi's life was when he was stopped when he started boarding the train in the first class compartment. After this incident of apartheid, Gandhiji advocated the fight for his rights. He kept his stay in South Africa and opposed the bill which deprived Indians of the right to vote. Gandhi lived in South Africa for twenty-one years. He started the Satyagraha movement in South Africa against the unjust treatment meted out to Indians there by the British. After which, he emerged as a great political leader for Indians.

Gandhi returned to India in January 1914 with the ambition to serve his people and bring freedom to his country. A year later, he moved to Ahmedabad on the banks of the Sabarmati River and established the Sabarmati Ashram in 1915. At first, he named it Satyagraha Ashram, which later came to be known as Sabarmati Ashram. There he devoted himself to the service of the people and took a vow of truth and non-violence. When the Rowlatt Act was passed, the civil liberties of Indians were denied, after which Gandhi entered active Indian politics. He came to the fore in the freedom struggle, and within a few years, he became the undisputed leader of the national independence movement. He became the President of the Indian National Congress. He opposed British rule and started a national movement to free India from foreign law.

The non-cooperation movement in 1920, the civil disobedience movement in 1939, the breaking of salt law and Quit India movement in 1942, etc. These movements shook the foundation of the British Empire in India and brought millions of Indians together in the freedom struggle movement. Gandhiji made non-violence and satyagraha his primary weapons to achieve independence. Gandhi's guidance and influence encouraged many women to participate in the freedom movement. Gandhi was also arrested several times for the movements. But no one could stop his resolve for national independence. Under his leadership, all Indians raised their voice for independence. Then the British realized they could no longer live in India, and on 15 August 1947, our country became independent.

Gandhiji has been the most significant contributor to Indian independence. He was also a great leader and social reformer. He influenced many great leaders worldwide to fight for their freedom without violence. Gandhi emphasized Hindu-Muslim unity, untouchability, upliftment of backward classes, centers of social development, village development, social freedom, and use of indigenous goods, etc. The independence movement of India is also called the Gandhian era.
